April Ross

April Ross was one of the few female beach volleyball athletes who earned medals at more than one Olympics. Ross will compete in Tokyo to compete for her third Olympic medal with Alix Klineman, a first time Olympian. Ross's goal is to win her first Olympic gold medal. With her age of 39, this may be her last opportunity to claim the gold medal at an Olympics. She is still confident but she is not sure. Ross on NBC Boston, said that when the team performs very well, or even at all, they could win a gold. "I'm also going to try to have a bit of luck." Ross, who was born 1982, and grew up in Costa Mesa California with her sister and parents, began competing in athletics at the Newport Harbor High School. In Newport Harbor High School, she competed in numerous sports. While a prep student she played basketball, indoor volleyball as well as running track. She was definitely the best at the sport of indoor volleyball. When she played in her time at the high school level, according to her college bio, she was an outside-hitter, middle-blocker and setter. The award was presented to her as by the Gatorade National Circle of Champions player of the year in 1999 for her achievements. Also, in 2000 she was awarded the Orange County Athlete of the Yr for volleyball. Ross and Klineman may have begun working together at the beginning of 2017, but Ross had already been a seasoned volleyball player before they teamed up. The fact is, she's been a winner of numerous major tournaments as well as one of her partners was an all-star volleyball player. From 2007 to 2013 she was in a partnership by Jennifer Kessy, who is now her coach. Kessy was Ross's teammate at the 2009 World Championships. The duo took silver in London's Olympic Games. The legendary Misty Maytreanor team along with Kerri Jennings were the winners of gold. The fate of the matter was that Ross was Walsh Jennings' new partner after May-Treanor's retirement. Together, they took home beach volleyball bronze for the Rio Olympics in the year the year 2016. Ross was a college player at USC Trojans prior to beginning her pro career. She was a player in high school and in some years before she hit the beach professionally. And her run at the school was a memorable one. In 2000, she was voted Pac-10 Freshman as well as NCAA Freshman of the Year and an All-American. The team also saw her help in helping the Trojans to make it to the Final Four. The Trojans suffered a heartbreaking personal loss in her sophomore year however she was able to return in the ranks of an All-American. The two years following her she led the Trojans to the top of the mountain and clinched consecutive national championships. She was a fantastic player on the court, and was awarded the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the top female volleyball player at the college level. Ross majored at USC in International Relations. Margie Ross was never able to watch her daughter's climb to beach volleyball fame. Ross's mother passed away from cancer of the breast when she was a sophomore at USC. Ross holds her mother dear. Margie is an inspiration both on and off of the beach.
