Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah - is an American actor, rapper and acrobat. In film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifahs parents split up when Latifah was ten years old. aged, was 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic schools at Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and compassionate". The cousin she had bestowed it on her at the age of eight. Latifah, a 5'10" tall forward on the high school team, was always tall. She sang the song home from The musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah began beatboxing with the fresh rap ladies. Latifah is one of the original members of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. Her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
